Learn-to-Skate at Gardner Park

This program is currently unavailable. Click here to view all of our current programs.

Learn-to-Skate lessons at Gardner Park are introductory programs that help brand new skaters gain confidence and practice basic skills. Children will learn how to move on ice, become more balanced and improve coordination while skating. Lessons are taught by experienced skaters using the Learn-to-Skate USA curriculum and activities.

Skill Level
While all are welcome to participate, Learn-to-Skate lessons are geared toward children who have little or no experience on skates. Private and Semi-Private lessons are available for those who are interested in intermediate or advanced lessons with our instructors. Email info@NewportRecreation.org for additional information.

Equipment
All participants must wear a helmet while participating in skating lessons at Gardner Memorial Park. Additional equipment (elbow pads, knee pads, hand/wrist guards, hockey shorts etc.) are not mandatory, but they do help eliminate the fear of falling in young skaters, which is one of the biggest reasons children give-up on the skill. Children who are properly equipped with safety gear tend to develop confidence more quickly and will have an easier time sticking with the program.

Ice skates and pads to borrow are also available through the program, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Children will use the same skates & equipment through the duration of the three week program.

COVID-19
Please note, masks will be required for instructors, participants and spectators over the age of 2, unless there is a medical or developmental issue complicated or irritated by a facial covering. While we do our very best to follow social distancing guidelines, it’s critical that each family acknowledge the inherent risk associated with activities that involve closer instructor-to-participant proximity to assist with development of technique. Each family must consider their individual comfort level when deciding whether or not to register for this program. By signing-up, you acknowledge that your family understands the risk and will follow COVID-19 protocols when at the park.
